so, I don't have many friends left in this silly town, and not even packing fills all my time. I have been watching a lot of olympics via the internets, which is pretty great. Here are my brief impressions of the various events, perhaps to be updated as I try out new and exciting sports, such as "archery," "dressage," or "200 meter hurdles." I highly recommend watching this shit, it's even worth putting up with the irritating announcers, mostly:
Badminton: Hilarious. Looks like the players might be having a lot of fun. Also, one woman from Poland had a crazy long-nailed shiny manicure, which I think is sort of jarring in an olympic athlete.
Cycling: I am waiting for the bmx races, haven't watched any of this other stuff. And I love the alien helmets, love em.
Diving: OK, guys, so synchronized diving may be my new favorite thing. Synchronized diving, people. How did I not even know this existed? (oh, and how did I not know there was an olympic trampoline event, completely separate from gymnastics?) It's amazing. The chinese teams, who have won gold in all the events I've seen of this so far, are ridiculous. I think their heartbeats are synchronized, jeez... so great. so great.
Gymnastics: I know it's a crowd pleaser, but I totally dig on the gymno. I completely acknowledge the creepiness of little girl faces and pony tails on bizarrely over-muscled little bodies, the whatthefuck factor of a completely blonde american team, and the ridiculous farce of artistic/dance value when everybody knows its the big flippies that count. But man, I do like watching people do flippies. Also, men's gymnastics, incredible. Especially the rings, but also all of it. Bodies, people! They make it look so easy, that's the thing. I watch gymnastics, and I think, oh, duh, I can just leap straight up off the ground into the splits and land on a 4-inch wide beam, no probs. Blindfolded, and with a ponytail.
Judo: was kind of boring. I didn't watch for long. I think you need to know the rules.
Rhythmic gymnastics: haven't even happened yet this olympics, but let me tell you, I know perfectly well they crack me up. I mean, really. That ribbon fluttering is just plain silly.
Swimming: always fun, cause I used to swim. Also, Michael Phelps is hot, except Katie told me he was dumb. It's still pretty great to watch him swim though.
Synchronized swimming: (see rhythmic gymnastics, but replace "ribbon fluttering" with "whitened teeth")
Table tennis: actually? Disappointingly boring. I was hoping for badminton-like excitement, but it seems that there's actually too much speed in this game for hilarity. Ping pong, wherefore art thou too serious?
Wrestling: sort of boring, like judo. But hotter.

I watched the women's final badminton match, and that shit was amazing. for reals. also, wrestling is the most homoerotic ever. not that that's a surprise, really, but still. When the dude in the 55kg class won, he leapt into his coaches arms, and his coach caught him by one leg, so for an extended period of time, his arm was all up ins the wrestler's crotch. homo-erotic.
post post post post new post! or maybe even a new blog?
